Mr. Wei Sun is an ASHRAE Board Director, ASHRAE Fellow, and Distinguished Lecturer since 2009. He was the Principal Author of the “ASHRAE Design Guide for Cleanrooms (2017)” and has served in numerous leadership roles, including Chair of the TC9.11 (Clean Spaces), Chair of the Environmental Health Committee (EHC), Chair of the Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC), and President of the Detroit Chapter. He was also the President of the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) from 2016-17 and Chairman of WG-12 Working Group (Cleanroom Design) of IEST. He has been serving as ISO TC209 USA Delegate for ISO 14644-4 & 14644-16 Standards and as Chairman of the National Environmental Balancing Bureau (NEBB)’s Cleanroom Performance Testing (CPT) Standard since 2018.

Mr. Sun’s professional experience includes working for several national architectural and engineering firms in the Midwest. He has held positions as an engineer, senior engineer, lead engineer, group leader, and department head, leading the design of many large and sophisticated cleanroom facilities, hospitals, bio-safety laboratories, and high-rise buildings. In addition to his expertise in cleanroom, hospital, and laboratory design, he has served as a Principal Investigator for many ASHRAE and governmental research projects. He led a US research consortium team to build a state-of-the-art fully automated cleanroom test lab and new technologies demonstration center in Michigan. He has been invited to conduct numerous technical speeches and training seminars at national and international conferences, visiting 35 countries since 2006. Mr. Sun has also served as a reviewer and judge of research proposals for NIOSH/CDC and DOE in the US.

Mr. Sun has authored and co-authored numerous publications, including the ASHRAE Design Guide for Laboratories (2nd edition in progress), the United States Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) Cleanroom Contamination Prevention and Control – A Practical Guide to The Science (2019), ASHRAE Journal articles such as “Reduction of Airborne Contamination Transmission and Migration – Inspirations from Cleanroom HVAC Concepts and Technologies” (2020), “Controlled Environments – Room Pressure Flow Offset Airtightness and Pressurization Strategies” (2018), IEST Journal article “Cleanroom Fan Energy Reduction—Airflow Control Retrofit Based on Continuous Real-time Particle Sensing” (2018), ASHRAE Journal article “Cleanroom Airlocks and Beyond” (2017), and the ASHRAE Book: ASHRAE Design Guide for Cleanrooms (2017).

Mr. Sun has been recognized with numerous awards, including the ASHRAE Dan Mills Award (2006), IEST Willis Whitfield Award (2016), IEST Robert Mielke Award (2017), ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer (DL) since 2009, ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award (DSA) (2019), ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award (ESA) (2019), and the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) Gold Award (2022).
